Team G has been preparing to take over the DFW Jiu Jitsu scene for some time now. This past Saturday we took a huge step toward that goal in conquering our first Team Title!!! We have had some great showings at tournaments in the past coming in 2nd and 3rd in the Team Rankings behind great teams like Alvarez BJJ and the Nova Uniao conglomerate. DFW Jiu Jitsu has come a long way and is now one of the most competitive scenes in the country and definitely in the State. This is a great accomplishment not just for the competitors but for the entire team. Our guys could not perform at this level and win these matches without the help of our training partners that push us everyday in the dojo. The competition team would like to give a HUGE thank you to all the teammates, parents, and supporters who made this possible. We look forward to reigning at the top of DFW’s BJJ scene for a loooong time!!! Ossssssssss!

We have more competitions coming up! If you are interested in representing your team 1st person style talk to Coach Tony or Bert! Competition is a wonderful motivator and teacher!

Randy made his 125lb debut against Frank Ortega in XKO 16 on Saturday evening. The fifth bout, started with a feeling out process that left Frank feeling slow. Randy’s feet were too fast for Frank to keep up with. Feeling the pressure Frank clinched Randy and after a moment of grappling Randy took Frank down. On top in the closed guard Randy landed big as he passed to the side and won the fight via tko by elbow strikes! The fight was stopped near the 2:30 mark of the first round! Hard training pays off! Go Team G!!! Big Congrats to Randy keeping it Villarreall!!!

The night continued and the 7th bout would feature Hayward Charles! The Hybrid displayed beautiful classic jiu jitsu locking in a triangle and forcing his opponent to tap in the first minute of the first round!! Huge Congrats to The Hybrid and Ironside MMA!!

November started off with a BANG for Team G!! This year we took 2 competitors, Mark DeLaRosa and Deymond Stephens. I would be coach andchaperonethis trip. Mark and I met up at Genesis Jiu Jitsu around 10 am Friday and headed straight for the airport. After a short flight from DFW to LAX, we landed and were greeted by our long time friends from Westside MMA in Arkansas, Mark Sniff and his lady Jessica, and Kris Pierce. They gave us a ride back to their hotel and we hung out and watched some tv while waiting for Deymond to arrive a little later. Deymond arrived around 7pm so we went to grab some dinner and get to the hotel for a good nights rest.

We woke up Saturday around 8am. Mark would roll at 11:30 so we had plenty of time to grab some breakfast and get to the tournament. We ate a great local place called Cowgirl Cafe then headed to the big blue pyramid at Cal State, Long Beach. This is a great venue for a BJJ tournament! There is ample stadium seating including bleachers and chairs, 3 large clean restrooms, a jumbotron, and a powerful sound system. There are descent concessions including the ever popular Acai booth. Mark and Deymond both checked their weight which was fine and then we waited patiently for them to compete. We found a seat with our Avengers teammates and watched the beginning of the 10 hour jiu jitsu marathon.

They called Mark’s division and he headed to the bullpen. His first match was against a very strong teenager with a wrestling background. After giving up an early takedown, Mark fought hard going for sweeps and submissions and even trying his own takedowns, but ended up losing 4-0 to the eventual champ. Mark immediately recognized his strategic error and looked to do better in the absolute!

After many hours of watching great brown and black belt matches, Deymond was called to the bullpen right at 4pm. Deymond looked great in his first match, controlling the positions and eventually landing his bread and butter, a Darce choke from half guard!! Deymond was clearly tired after his first match but that is to be expected in these types of battles! A few deep breaths and sips of water later, Deymond was focused and ready for his 2nd match. His competitor was very strategic and played closed guard for the first few minutes of the match allowing very few opportunities for Deymond to pass. Finally around the 4 minute mark, Deymond was able to bring his knee though to half guard and nearly pass scoring an advantage which would decide the match. Close one! Now Deymond was really fired up as he realized he was one match away from the gold medal! Deymond entered his finals match aggressive and immediately jumped for a flying guillotine! Close but no cigar.. Deymond kept attacking and ended up taking the back and almost mounting before they scrambled back to their feet. From here the guy shot in and Deymond landed the GOLD MEDAL GUILLOTINE!!! HUGE CONGRATS TO TEAM G’S NEWEST WORLD CHAMPION!!!

Click here to watch Deymonds Gold Medal Match!

Next up was Mark’s absolute division which was called at 6pm. Mark’s first match was against a good guard player from California. Mark worked methodically and after about 3 minutes he was able to nearly pass, force turtle, take the back, and finish! His next match was against a game wrestler from Paragon. Mark immediately pulled guard this time remembering the lesson from his first match. Mark was able to score 2 sweeps in the first 4 minutes and was up 4-0.With just 30 seconds left Mark’s opponent attacked vigorously trying to pull out a win.At this moment with time ticking down and the fatigue of a long day setting in Mark lost focus for one brief moment allowing a sweep and guard pass putting him down 5-4. This is a time that requires extreme focus and concentration to be able to defend the attacks being desperately launched at you! Mark ended up losing the match but not without learning a valuable lesson. You must stay focused and grapple the entire match. One moment of lost concentration can cost you the sweet taste of victory. Mark walked away from the tournament a more seasoned and hungry competitor and a VERY bright future!

We stayed and watched the rest of the tournament and then headed to one of L.A.’s… (and the worlds for that matter) finest restaurants Fatburger! Yea that’s right its is the bomb.com and I hope they follow In-and-Outs lead and open one up right here in Funkytown. We enjoyed our delicious fatburgers and then headed straight to the airport for our midnight flight back home! Another great trip for Team Genesis!!

Back in 2002 with her only Son now out of the nest my Mom decided to pack her bags and move up north to Alaska! This did not come as a surprise to me. For most of my early childhood my Mom supported our family with her job as a travel nurse. She loved traveling and seeing the world while doing her job…Like mother like son huh? However in 1994 after spending my 3rd grade in 3 different states (Texas, Arkansas, and Arizona) she decided to settle down for a while in Waco, Texas where I completed 4-12 grade.

For many years she had talked about returning to her position as a travel nurse. When she was offered a job in Anchorage for the summer after my high school graduation she eagerly jumped at the opportunity to see and experience life in this majestic land. Her original plan was to take a 6 month contract there and then move to the next paradise. She ended up loving Alaska soooo much she never left. Lucky for her there is jiu jitsu there

Though I would be happy to visit my Mom no matter where she was, living in one of the most scenic landscapes in the world, and being located next to top notch jiu jitsu is a HUGE bonus!!! Gracie Barra Alaska is located just minutes from the airport and the mats are always warm! Over the years I have developed a wonderful relationship with the family that is GB AK. This October I was quite flattered and excited when they invited me to come teach a seminar and share my jiu jitsu! As soon as I got the offer I agreed and started planning the 5 day trip. Lucky for me fellow G Josh Keller was looking for a little adventure himself!

We woke up at the crack of dawn Wednesday Oct. 5th excited to catch our 7am flight out of DFW. Just 9 short hours later we landed ready to explore The Last Frontier! Right away we got our rental car and headed out to meet the team for lunch at a local resturant. There we were greeted by the GB staff and my good friend and our host “Uncle Bob” as his students and teammates affectionately call him, who is quite honestly one of the coolest dudes you could ever meet. After lunch Bob took us to his home where we caught up a little bit and rested for the Jiu Jitsu class that night at 6:30pm. On the way to the dojo Bob asked if I would teach some classes to help promote the seminar. I was more than happy to as I love sharing my jiu jitsu with new people and immediately thought of a lesson plan. As we arrived Josh and I were both greeted by the team with open arms. The energy in the academy was great and really made me feel at home! I taught some mount escapes which the new class absorbed really well thanks to the great foundation built by the native instructors. After technique we got some great rolls in with the students before we showered made the hour long drive to Wasilla to finally say hello and visit with my Mom. We got in around 9pm and after a long day she prepared some dinner for us and showed us our rooms.

We woke up Thursday full of life ready to roll. My Mom is Black Belt gardener so we enjoyed a variety of fresh and frozen home grown fruits and vegetables for breakfast. The food situation was not going to be a problem! After properly fueling our bodies we headed to the dojo for some more jiu jitsu! After another great training session we headed to a famous local resturant called the Mooses’ Tooth Pub & Pizzeria. This place is LEGIT!!! We enjoyed the gourmet pizza and then headed back to Wasilla to spend the evening with my Mom. It was great to visit with her as we had been quite busy up to this point of the trip. That night she prepared us a wonderful Salmon dinner (which she caught!) and chatted with us about life in Alaska. Josh and I were both excited to do some adventuring so that night we planned a hike for the next day.

Friday morning the sun came up and we had one goal. Get on top of one of these mountains!!! Luckily one of the guys from the dojo who was stationed with the military let us borrow a lot of cold weather gear. The temp on the ground was nearing freezing and it was sure to be colder at the summit. We scarfed down a Texan sized breakfast (which is still huge even in Alaska) and headed to Hatcher’s Pass. The drive there was super scenic. Every direction you look you are surrounded by snow capped mountains, beautiful lakes, and the bright leaves of fall. As we drove higher the trees disappeared and the summits revealed themselves through the foggy clouds. Mom dropped us off in the valley surrounded by 6,000 ft peaks. Josh and I looked for the best looking one and went right for it!

The hike started with a nice, easy march up the side of a reasonbly steep hill and smoothed out into an awesome plateau covered in all kinds of interesting plant life and berries. From there we continued up another rather large hill and up a pretty steep face to reach our first peak! The view from here was grand exposing a gorgeous blue lake nestled on the other side of the ridge. We relaxed here for a bit just taking in the views and refueling with our green smoothie that we packed! Perks of hiking in the cold! From there we scoped out the ridge and picked our path up. We worked our way across a flat snow covered area for about 200 feet until we reached our next obstacle. Firm footing and bipedalism are now a thing of the past. Steep inclines of jagged rocks, some stable some not, almost all covered in snow now stood between us and our next goal…the devils horns. Things are truly narly at this point. Josh and I are both on our most extreme mountain climbing adventure with zero climbing gear. This was supposed to be a nice hike up to a relaxing peak! But we are MEN! Some RMFG’s! We continue! We safely maneuvered our way around the devils horns to reveal the final peak….Should we go on? the last next 50 feet were no problem compared to what we just did but the summit seemed too steep. There was no path visible that we could climb. Only way to find out was get closer. We worked our way across the last stretch of chaotically placed rocks to our last obstacle. The one thing that stood between us and the summit, and victory, was 25 feet of near vertical granite. It was clear at this point we were not coming down the same we we came up. Josh led the way carefully selecting hand and foot holds to pull him self up. I followed. Half way up sheer terror kept me focused, as I came to realization that there was no turning back now. Down was too steep with no ropes. We united at the top and shimmied across one last small ledge to reveal the final peak! Finally we had reached the summit!!! We found a safe place to sit and enjoy the 360 degree view and revel in our victory!

After enjoying our conquest for a few minutes it was time to face our next very critical task at hand. The descent. Crabwalking was the technique of choice. We found a relatively gradual slope and descended as quickly and safely as possible. Some sections or the gorge we filled with giant 10 foot slabs of smooth granite that had to be slid down. After hundreds of feet of buttsliding down snow covered rocks and grass we reached a plateau. The rest of the journey would be easy! “Its all downhill from here” I thought giggling at my punnyness. We reached the bottom and celebrated a wonderful adventure at a nice local Japanese restaurant. This was without a doubt one of the coolest, scariest, most rewarding adventure I have ever been on. Through the times of fear I give credit to my Jiu Jitsu training for keeping me calm. Without the mental toughness and physical conditioning I get from Jiu Jitsu fear or fatigue may have conquered us…NEVER!!!

After a good nights rest we woke up Saturday and headed to Gracie Barra Alaska for my seminar. I had planned a detailed back attack seminar and was excited to share it with our new jiu jitsu brothers. We arrived a little early and hung out until everyone showed up. We had a great attendance totaling 34 people! I shared a few of my favorite back control drills, back takes, and detailed finishes. Everyone was genuinely interested and following along great. We wrapped things up with a few fun kimura attacks to the back and then snapped a team pic. After the seminar we headed to a local pizza place for lunch and then back to Wasilla to pack and spend time with my parents before we left. We would spend the night in Anchorage in order to make our early flight. Around 6:30 we headed back into Anchorage to watch the UFC with the Gracie Barra family. It was a great night of fights! Watching the way Frankie Edgar fought back was is a testament to what mental toughness, fortitude, and conditioning are all about. Not to discount his incredible movement and technique. After the fights we headed to Bob’s to get some rest before our flight. The next morning we turned in the rental car and made our journey back to Fort Worth.

What more can you ask for? Jiu Jitsu, adventure, and friends. After its all done it is great to back back home at Genesis with my immediate jiu jitsu family! Until the next great adventure….

This Saturday we packed the house at Genesis with teammates and family members to celebrate the progress of each student! We started the morning with a great training session in the Pro Class. After catching our breath and stretching a bit we all lined up and the ceremony began. First we awarded stripes to the kids and the adults. Big congrats to everyone who received a stripe! After stripes we awarded 3 Orange Belts to Dillan, Tristan, and Don! We also were very happy to award a Blue, Purple, and Brown Belt this weekend! Congrats to Chris, Cass, and Paul on their promotions!! It is a very excited time in your training to graduate to the next belt! For those who begin as adults it only happens 4 times your entire career! Make sure you stop by and say congrats to the graduates.

Team Genesis ventured to Houston this week looking to show Texas how we roll! We met up at the G cave Friday around 2pm and headed to H-Town. We made it to the weigh-ins just in time and everyone made their target weight with ease. Finally everyone could eat so we headed to the nearest place to stuff our faces with some pasta! After dinner everyone was ready to get back to the room and get a good nights rest.

Saturday morning we awoke to the smell of victory and self-improvement. We followed the scent straight to Legends Sport Complex where the tournament was held. The Women&Kids divisions ran first. We had Mark DeLaRosa there representing to the fullest! G shaved in the head and all! After 6 matches Mark took Gold in his Gi and No Gi divisions becoming the Teens Advanced and Blue Belt State Champion! Ossssssssssssssssss!

Up next we had Angie Platt, Andrea Keller, Amy Seeling, and Christina Tran competing in the Womens division. All the ladies fought very well and in the end brought home 3 Bronze medals and 2 Golds!! Andrea won her gi and No gi divisions becoming the Womens beginner and White Belt State Champion!! Awwwwwwrrrredddy!!!

After the women and children had all their fun it was time for the mens divisions. We brought quite a crew including Jerry Browne, Gene Thompson, Kalen Vespoli, Carl Byrd, Will Mckee, Andres Castillo, Albert Martinez, Jeff Houpt, Alex Guerrero, Steve Gephardt, Marvin Salano, Eric Lincoln. Things got pretty hectic around this time. We had multiple competitors on different mats most of the day. Jerry West made it to the finals of his no gi division and fought current Black Belt No-Gi World Champion Brandon Mullins in a very fun match. He ended up submitting to the RNC and taking Silver in the Masters Advanced Division. In the Gi Jerry beat two very tough young guys to become Purple Belt State Champion!!! HOLLA!

Jerry B. went 1-1 taking Bronze! Steve G. went 4-2 taking Bronze in no gi! Will went 2-1 taking a Bronze in no gi! Kalen had 14…yea fourteen matches. he went 12-2 taking Bronze in both gi and no gi.

Tony won his first two matches impressively before losing a very exciting match in the semi’s to Carlos Deigo Ferreira taking Bronze in the no gi.

I won my first 3 matches in the no gi then lost in the finals to Carlos taking Silver. I got a rematch in the Gi with him and although he beat me again it was a much closer match and I felt instant improvement! I stuck around for the Absolute division hoping to make $500 Unfortunately I lost my first match 2-0 to Jorge Patino. In this match the ref made an error by not scoring a takedown for me. This is the nature of our sport. Referees are not perfect and this is likely to happen to every competitor in their career. Looking back on my match I missed an opportunity to attack a submission which would have opened up a pass if he defended. ALWAYS GO FOR THE SUBMISSION!!!

Overall this was a FANTASTIC jiu jitsu experience! Each and everyone of our competitors gained super bonus XP (experience points). Throughout the tournament we were complimented over and over again on our students performances!! This is the greatest honor for us as coaches! Thanks to everyone who came out to support the team and all of our training partners back at the G cave!!! Huge thanks to Paul McDonough for doing a fantastic job coaching this weekend while Tony and I were competing! We are taking this momentum and experience straight to IBJJF Dallas May 8th! Train like champions Team G!
