FAQ

What is rolling?

Rolling is what we call sparring. This is basically a controlled fight where strikes are eliminated and the object is to make your opponent tapout by using a joint lock or choking technique. Its kind of like wrestling with your friends when you were a kid…but with experienced coaches around to make you really good.

What is drilling?

Getting repetitions. That is the key to learning. Every time you do a repetition your body remembers the movement a little better and you can pick up on small details which are not at first apparent.

How old do you start the kids?

Our kids martial arts classes have kids as young as 5.

What is the difference between the fundamental, advanced, and all levels jiu jitsu classes?

Fundamental class is geared toward the beginner and classroom type who enjoy learning the finer details by working through the moves at their own pace.
Class is split up with 5-10 minute warmup, 40 minutes of drilling, and 10-15 of rolling.
Advanced class starts with a faster pace warm up and drilling session which combined last for 15-20 minutes. The remainder of the hour is used for rolling.
All levels classes are great for everyone with time being split pretty evenly between drilling and rolling.

How long does it take to get a (whatever) belt?

This depends entirely on how often you train. We can’t stress enough that it is the journey that is important! Promotions in brazilian jiu jitsu are significant. Adults will only be promoted belt colors 4 times in their entire years long journey. For someone training 3 to 5 times a week consistently their promotions could look something like this. Blue belt in 1 to 2 years. Purple in 3-5. Brown in 4-7, Black in 7 to 10 years.

Kids start as white belts and go through the ranks of the grey, yellow, orange, and green belt. When they are 16 they are eligible for the blue belt. At 18 they are eligible for the black belt.
