Capoeira
Capoeira, the dance, fight, game is a Brazilian martial art that encompasses the whole body to perform acrobatic leaps, beautiful kicks and daring escapes.
Originating in Brazil with African roots Capoeira at one time was outlawed until the 1930′s. Mestre Bimba(Manoel dos Reis Machado) opened one of the first schools in Brazil. His style and teachings of capoeira where unique, taking the traditional style of angola capoeira and making the movements more upright.
Today Mestre Bimba’s style, capoeira regional, is widely practice and strongly influenced on a more contemporary style of capoeira known as capoeira contemporânea. Capoeira contemporânea consists of well rounded, upright kicks, sweeps, acrobatic moves such as the Au(brazilian cartwheel) and the infamous ginga. No matter what, every style of capoeira is enjoyed in the roda and danced to the sound of Brazilian percussion instruments and Brazilian folklore songs.
Capoeira at Genesis Jiu Jitsu focus mainly on the contemporary style of capoeira, although some classes may employ such characteristics from regional capoeira or angola capoeira primarily for teaching purposes.
